2009 was a great year. Good News! On November 6 the first-time homeowner credit was extended until April 30, 2010. If a binding contract is in place by the deadline, the buyers have until June 30, 2010 to close. The tax credit is UP TO $8,000. Be sure to check with your accountant to see how much you are eligble for.
Non-first time homebuyers also scored in the new regulation--under certain circumstances:
Up to a $6,500 tax credit is available for individuals who have lived in their home for five consecutive years out of the last eight.
Income limit for single buyers is $125,000; married buyers filing jointly is $225,000.
Buyers MUST live in the home purchased for a minimum of three years in order to avoid paying back the tax credit.
